I do not enjoy Halloween.
Or really even Christmas for that matter.
Maybe I’m like Charlie Brown in that I don’t enjoy the commercialization of the holidays.
I go along with it all for the sake of family and friends, but I’d much rather enjoy stress-free quality time with each other than swapping gift cards or loading down the kids with sugar and too much stuff.

The holidays can bring a mix of joy, nostalgia, and sometimes even dread.
Between Halloween and New Year’s, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by expectations, family dynamics, packed schedules, and financial pressures. But even in the midst of stress, God’s goodness is ever-present.
Let’s explore a few ways to notice His goodness this season, even when the holiday spirit feels hard to come by.
1. Embrace Simple Moments of Joy
One of the beautiful things about God’s goodness is that it doesn’t depend on our circumstances. While grand traditions and expensive experiences can add joy to the holidays, simple moments—like a walk through the neighborhood to see Halloween decorations, a cozy evening watching Christmas movies, or a hot cocoa night with loved ones—are often where we feel His presence most. Pause in these moments to recognize and give thanks for the joy and peace they bring, even if just for a short time.
Scripture Inspiration: “Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
Sometimes the best way to experience God’s goodness is by slowing down and savoring quiet, precious moments with our closest people.
2. Gratitude for What’s Free
Holidays often come with extra expenses, and it’s easy to feel discouraged when budgets are tight. Instead of focusing on what might be lacking, shift the perspective to what we already have: health, the love of family and friends, and the grace of God that covers us daily. Practicing gratitude can bring a deep sense of contentment and peace, reminding us that God’s goodness is not dependent on financial abundance.
Scripture Inspiration: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
God’s goodness shows up in countless ways, often in the provision of simple needs and everyday blessings.
3. Focus on What Matters Most
Sometimes, the holiday stress comes from doing too much. Between Halloween parties, Thanksgiving meals, and Christmas festivities, we may feel pressured to do it all. God’s goodness encourages us to focus on what truly matters: our relationship with Him, our family, and the moments that bring joy and connection. Letting go of obligations that feel heavy or joyless can create room for meaningful time with loved ones and a renewed sense of peace.
Scripture Inspiration: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21
Invest your energy in what matters most and allow God’s goodness to shine through.
4. Serve Others with a Heart of Generosity
When we feel weighed down by stress or financial concerns, a beautiful way to experience God’s goodness is by serving others. Serving doesn’t have to cost anything. Volunteer as a family at a food pantry, spend an afternoon visiting someone who may feel lonely, or write a thoughtful note to brighten someone’s day. By sharing love, you’re reflecting God’s goodness and creating a ripple of His joy that can lift your own spirit as well.
Scripture Inspiration: “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” – Galatians 5:13
Serving others reminds us that we are instruments of God’s goodness, bringing light even in difficult times.
5. Lean on God When You’re Overwhelmed
Holidays can reveal our struggles and weaknesses, but they can also draw us closer to God. When stress mounts or finances feel tight, turn to Him for guidance and support. Instead of letting worry control the season, lean into prayer, reflect on His promises, and trust that His goodness will guide you through. Remember, His peace is available to us at all times, even when it feels hard to find.
Scripture Inspiration: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
When we give our burdens to God, He meets us with His goodness and peace, lifting what we cannot carry alone.

6. Celebrate the Gift of Jesus
As the year draws to a close, Christmas and New Year’s remind us of the greatest gift we’ve received: Jesus. Amid the hustle and bustle, take time to reflect on the miracle of His birth and the hope He brings. Christmas can be a time to renew our hearts, remember His goodness, and start the New Year grounded in the knowledge that we are deeply loved and never alone.
Scripture Inspiration: “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” – 2 Corinthians 9:15
Celebrating Jesus is the heart of the holidays, a reminder of the ultimate goodness we find in God’s love.
From Miserable to Merry
The holidays can be overwhelming, but they’re also an opportunity to see God’s goodness in fresh, unexpected ways.
Instead of walking through this season miserable, let’s notice God’s goodness in each moment with merriment and awe. Beholding His provision and unfaltering love during this season, we can embrace the fruitfulness of the Lord instead of our discontentment and vanity.
Whether through simple moments, acts of service, or the quiet peace of gratitude, God is with us, inviting us to see His hand in every part of the season.
Mama, no matter how difficult or joyful the season may be, His goodness is woven through it all, offering us hope, peace, and love. Don’t miss it trying to perpetuate the unattainable expectations of the world. God is all that we need.
