Faithful Resolutions: Cultivating Self-Control for a Purposeful New Year

— by

As we bid farewell to one year and prepare to embrace another, the buzz about New Year’s resolutions is everywhere. For many, these resolutions symbolize hope – a fresh start, a chance to grow, improve, and set meaningful goals. But as busy moms juggling countless responsibilities, we often find that our resolutions fizzle out before February arrives.

Why do so many of us, especially busy moms, struggle to keep our resolutions?

Because change requires more than good intentions; it requires self-control.

Thankfully, God’s Word provides both guidance and strength to cultivate this vital fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

A Biblical View of Self-Control

Self-control is not about sheer willpower or striving in our own strength.

As Titus 2:11-12 reminds us, it’s the grace of God that empowers us to “say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions” and to “live self-controlled, upright and godly lives.”

Self-control is part of living a Spirit-filled life, rooted in God’s grace and aligned with His will.

When we approach New Year’s resolutions with this perspective, our goals shift from being self-focused to God-focused. Instead of striving to meet the world’s standards of success, we seek to grow in Christlikeness, making choices that honor Him and benefit those we love.

Setting Realistic and Faith-Based Resolutions

To make resolutions that last, start with these faith-based strategies:

1. Seek God’s Guidance

Pray and ask God to reveal the areas in your life that need change. Whether it’s prioritizing your health, managing your time better, or being more patient with your kids, invite Him into the process. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart” and to “acknowledge Him” in all our ways. Let your resolutions flow from His leading.

2. Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Make your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying, “I want to spend more time with God,” commit to reading your Bible for 15 minutes each morning before the day gets busy. Small, consistent actions lead to lasting change.

3. Rely on God’s Strength

Remember, self-control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). You don’t have to muster it up on your own. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you stay disciplined and faithful, especially when challenges arise.

4. Embrace Grace Over Perfection

You will stumble. When you do, don’t give in to guilt or throw in the towel. Instead, turn back to God’s grace, which equips and sustains you. Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us that His mercies are new every morning.

5. Incorporate Accountability

Share your goals with a trusted friend, your small group, or your spouse. Having someone to pray with and encourage you can make all the difference. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 highlights the value of partnership: “Two are better than one…if either of them falls, one can help the other up.”

6. Visualize and Track Your Goals

The common saying, “out of sight, out of mind” rings true with a lot of things, but especially with tracking and visualizing your goals. A tracked number grows because when you’re paying attention to the trajectory and progress of your goals, you can pivot midcourse and adjust, as necessary.

    Resolutions Rooted in Faith

Here are a few ideas for resolutions that align with biblical principles:

    • Commit to daily prayer and Bible study.
    • Make time for Sabbath rest to refresh your body and soul.
    • Practice gratitude daily to shift your focus from what’s lacking to God’s blessings.
    • Set boundaries to protect time with your family and to avoid overcommitting.
    • Prioritize health as a way to steward the body God has given you.

“Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.” — Fitzhugh Dodson
