You’re standing in the middle of your living room, overwhelmed by the chaos around you. The kids are fighting, the laundry’s piling up, the dishes are calling your name, and your work email is chiming in the background. You think, “How can I possibly juggle all of this?”
The truth is, you can’t.
But here’s the good news—you don’t have to. When you align your choices with your core values, you’ll start to see the stress fade and clarity take its place. Let me show you how identifying what truly matters can change everything.
Why We Feel Overwhelmed
As busy, working mamas, we have a lot on our plates. The stress, burnout, and decision fatigue are real. Whether the lists are in our heads or written down, they seem endless:
- Make dinner, pack lunches, grocery shop, and meal prep.
- Schedule date nights, babysitters, doctor’s appointments, and extracurricular activities.
- Wonder when you last mopped the floors, whether the dishwasher ran overnight, and if the garage door is closed.
- Go from one bedroom to the next, tucking each child in for the extended bedtime routine.
And we haven’t even touched on work yet.
No wonder we feel overwhelmed! But when we start filtering our lists through the lens of our priorities, we narrow our focus to what matters most in our daily lives.
The Freedom of Filtering Through Values
For example, if your faith is a top priority, you may choose to say “no” to an early morning soccer tournament on Sundays because it conflicts with church.
Prioritizing your values offers clarity and reduces overwhelm because tasks that don’t align with your values can be delegated, deferred, or deleted altogether.
Here’s the key: When you determine your top values and filter all your decisions through them, you’ll start making different choices. You’ll say “no” more confidently to things that don’t serve your values and “yes” to the things that do.
How to Identify Your Values
If you’re unsure of your values amid the daily noise, try this quick exercise:
1. Brain Dump: List everything that matters most to you.
2. Group and Categorize: Look for themes or categories that stand out.
3. Pick Your Top 3-5: Identify the values that resonate most deeply with your hearts.
Let me share a tangible example: My top values are faith, family, health, and freedom. Freedom, for me, comes through meaningful work.
If someone asked me to work a third shift at a hotel, I’d say no—it disrupts my sleep (health), limits time with my family, and keeps me from my morning quiet time with God (faith).
But if my best friend invited me to a women’s retreat, I’d likely say yes. It aligns with my faith, recharges me (health and freedom), and allows me to show up better for my family afterward.
Practical Steps to Start Living by Your Values
1. Reflect on Your Current Choices: What can you delegate, defer, or delete?
2. Do the Next Right Thing: Start with one habit or action that aligns with your values.
3. Start Small: Small shifts can create a big ripple effect. Begin with something simple, like making your bed each morning, and notice how it feels.
Habits create momentum, and momentum creates motivation. As you take small, intentional steps aligned with your values, you’ll build confidence and clarity in your daily life.
Life will always be busy, but it doesn’t have to feel chaotic. When you choose to prioritize your values, you’ll find a sense of purpose and peace that makes the juggling act feel manageable.
Take some time this week to try the exercise and identify your core values. Let them guide your choices and give you permission to let go of the rest. You don’t have to do it all—you just have to do what matters most.
