3 Simple Ways to Reclaim Your Time When Life Feels Chaotic

— by

Mama, I see you.

You’re juggling a million things – work deadlines, school drop-offs, endless laundry, and maybe even trying to squeeze in a little time for yourself (if that even exists!). Some days, it feels like no matter how hard you try, you’re just barely keeping up.

How do I know this? Because I’m right there with you in the trenches.

Recently, between my day job, kids, marriage, and this business, I have felt the compounding weight of trying to do it all on my shoulders.

Even knowing better and how to fix it, I still get into this situation from time to time. I’m a high achiever. Some might even call me overzealous.

Sometimes the boundaries I need to set are for myself and not necessarily for others.

On the days when I feel like, I just can’t keep going at this breakneck speed anymore, I remember this good news: small, intentional changes can make a big difference.

You don’t have to overhaul your entire schedule to start feeling more in control.

Here are three simple, practical ways to reclaim your time (and sanity) starting today:

1. Do a 5-Minute Reset

When everything feels overwhelming, take a deep breath and hit the reset button. Set a timer for five minutes and tackle one thing that will bring immediate relief – clearing the kitchen counter, responding to a quick email, or jotting down tomorrow’s top priorities. This small action can create instant mental clarity and momentum for the rest of your day.

2. Set ‘Non-Negotiable’ Boundaries

Not everything on your to-do list is urgent or even necessary. Choose 1-3 non-negotiable tasks that matter most each day – things like dinner with your family, 30 minutes of focused work time, or a few moments of quiet prayer. Protect these pockets of time like they’re appointments, and let go of the guilt that comes with saying no to things that don’t align with your priorities.

3. Use ‘The Power of 3’ Rule

Instead of an overwhelming to-do list, focus on three key tasks each day.

There are lots of ways you can do this, but my favorite way is to plan my top 3 tasks at work, start with the hardest tasks first instead of procrastinating, and just do one thing at a time. Then, depending on how long I’m home (and awake), I might do the same thing and pick my top 3 tasks at home and accomplish them one at a time.

Another way to do this would be picking one key task at home, one at work, and one for yourself like I detail below.

Or even a variation of this where you have your top 3 work tasks on weekdays, and only one thing for home and one thing for yourself, because let’s be real, time at home on weekdays is definitely limited.

✔ One thing for your home (laundry, meal prep, tidying up)

✔ One thing for your work (answer emails, complete a project, prep for a meeting)

✔ One thing for yourself (a quick walk, reading, journaling)

By narrowing your focus, you’ll feel more accomplished instead of constantly behind.

Small Shifts, Big Impact

Mama, I know the weight of trying to do it all can feel crushing. But remember, reclaiming your time doesn’t mean reinventing your entire schedule – it starts with small, intentional shifts.

A five-minute reset, setting non-negotiable boundaries, and focusing on just three key tasks each day can help you move from overwhelmed to more in control.

You don’t have to do everything – just focus on what matters most. And when life still feels chaotic? Give yourself grace. You’re doing far more than you realize. If you need a break, take one before you break down completely.
