It was Friday night, and the end of another long week. I found myself staring blankly at next week’s list, clutching my planner like it could magically fix everything.
The dishwasher was full of clean dishes I hadn’t put away. My inbox had 187 unread emails. My 4-year-old was melting down over a missing marker. And my mind was already racing with the never-ending list of to-dos for the week ahead: PTO tasks, work reports, blog content, groceries, doctor appointments, and somehow – somehow – making space for Jesus, family, margin, and sleep.
I was overcommitted, running on empty, and I knew something had to change.
That was the night I finally realized this pace wasn’t sustainable… not for my family, not for my health, and definitely not for the life of purpose God was calling me to live.
What I needed wasn’t just a better planner. I needed a reset.
The Problem with Overcommitment in Working Mom Life
If you’re anything like me, your calendar is crammed with good things. Important things, even. Work deadlines, school drop-offs, ministry meetings, meal plans, grocery runs, birthday parties, sports schedules, and somewhere in there, your own needs (maybe).
The problem isn’t that we don’t care. It’s that we care so much about everything that we forget we can’t do everything… at least not all at once, and not without burning out.
As overwhelmed working moms, we often carry the invisible weight of making life “work” for everyone else while quietly neglecting our own spiritual, emotional, and physical needs. We say yes to more than we have capacity for, not because we’re careless, but because we want to be helpful, present, and dependable.
But when our yeses exceed our capacities, we start living in survival mode. That’s not what God intended for us.
Boundaries Are a Form of Obedience
The Bible reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:1 that there’s a time for everything which means not everything belongs in your current season.
“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NLT)

When you protect your time and energy with healthy boundaries, you’re not being selfish, you’re stewarding your life well. You’re choosing faithfulness over franticness, obedience over overextension.
Boundaries aren’t barriers blocking you from being reliable, present, or helpful. They’re sacred guardrails that protect what matters most.
They help you honor your current season instead of constantly fighting against it.
Knowing there is a season or time for everything allows us to demonstrate reverence toward God and obedience through the actions and limits we place on ourselves and others in our current seasons.
But how do we actually do that when life feels like a constant fire drill?
The Weekly Reset: A Game-Changer for Your Sanity
One of the most powerful tools I’ve discovered in reclaiming peace, purpose, and perspective each week is what I now call my Weekly Reset Ritual.
It’s simple. It’s sacred. And it’s saved my sanity more times than I can count.
What is a Weekly Reset?
A weekly reset is a short, intentional pause where you zoom out, check in, and reset your rhythms before the week gets away from you. Plan these on a day when you have time to reflect on the past week and plan ahead for the next week. For me, this looks like Friday night or Saturday morning. For others, it may be Sunday night or Monday morning.
It’s where you:
- Reconnect with your values and priorities
- Reflect on what worked (and didn’t) last week
- Release unnecessary obligations or stress
- Realign your schedule with what matters most
It takes 15–30 minutes, and it gives you clarity, direction, and margin for grace as you head into a brand-new week.
Why It Matters: The Power of Planning with Purpose
Here’s what happens when you build a consistent weekly reset into your routine:
1. You Protect Your Priorities
When you pause to look at the full picture, you can say yes with intention, and no without guilt. You’re not just reacting to life’s demands; you’re leading your week with clarity.
Planning ahead helps you live your values instead of violating them.
2. You Reduce Overwhelm
Having a plan lowers the mental load. It keeps you from scrambling at 6pm wondering what’s for dinner, or saying yes to a last-minute event you’ll regret later.
Your future self will thank you for creating margin, even if it’s just one quiet night at home or 10 minutes of Bible time before bed.
3. You Reinforce Your Boundaries
A weekly reset lets you name what matters and filter your commitments accordingly.
You start to notice the things that drain you, distract you, or derail your peace. And instead of just hoping you’ll have time to rest or connect with God, you make space for it on purpose.
What My Weekly Reset Looks Like (In Real Life)
Let me give you a peek into what this looks like practically. Most Friday nights (after the kids are in bed and before I turn on Netflix), I pour a cup of tea, grab my planner or notebook, and do a quick reset.
Here’s my flow:
- Pause + Pray – I start by asking God for wisdom: What do You want my focus to be this coming week? What do I need to let go of?
- Look Back – I jot down a quick reflection: What felt good this past week? What drained me? What did I learn?
- Look Ahead – I review the calendar, plug in appointments, sketch out meals, and make note of anything unusual coming up (field trips, late meetings, etc.).
- Protect Margin – I block out white space. One night with no plans. One pocket of time for something that fills me up.
- Prep What I Can – This might include my Saturday morning grocery list (my favorite time to go with no kids and my Starbucks drink in hand), laying out clothes, or putting in a Target pickup order. It’s not about perfection. It’s about preparing with peace.

You Don’t Need to Do It All. Just Start With This.
If you’re feeling behind, burdened, or bone-tired from trying to juggle it all, I want to gently remind you:
You weren’t created to live on empty.
You were created to live on purpose.
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life this week. Just start with a simple reset. Just 15 minutes of intention can change your whole week, and your whole mindset.
You are not failing. You are human. And God’s grace meets you exactly where you are, right in the middle of the mess, the chaos, the burnout, and the blank planner page.
Let this be your invitation to reset.
