From Survival Mode to Sustainable Rhythms: 5 Tips to Take Back Your Time for Working Moms

Have you ever hit a metaphorical wall so hard, you didn’t think you’d be able to peel yourself off?

I have. And those times have been riddled with doubts, desperation, and despair.

From juggling drop-offs and deadlines to dishes and laundry, the pressure to hold it all together feels relentless. You’re just trying to maintain some semblance of sanity so you don’t get judged for falling apart or not doing enough well enough.

That’s survival mode. And when it hits, it can sweep your feet out from under you without warning.

Even snippets of self-care can feel rushed, sporadic, or maybe even selfish.

But hear me on this: God never meant for us to live like this.

When we cry out to Him asking for a better way, He reminds us, through His Word and His presence, that we were made for more than just making it through.

Galatians 6:9 calls us to endure:

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

God doesn’t promise an easy path. But He does promise that our faithfulness will bear fruit, and that includes the faithfulness of managing our homes, schedules, and souls with intention.

When we declare that we need God, instead of a new planner or perfect routine, we invite a mindset reset that realigns our rhythms, relationships, and reactions with His wisdom.

This realignment honors God and our current season, protects our mental health, and mends our broken hearts restoring peace and purpose in our lives.

5 Tips to Take Back Your Time as a Working Mom

If you’ve been wondering whether peace is even possible in your current season, I want you to know:

👉🏻 I see you.

👉🏻 I am you.

👉🏻 And I want to help.

These five tips helped me step out of chaos and into rhythms that bring peace. They can help you, too.

1. Anchor Your Day, Don’t Micromanage It

Trying to time-block every second of your day is unrealistic—and exhausting.

Instead, choose 1–2 anchor points that bring structure and stability. Maybe it’s quiet time with God in the morning, an after-school check-in with your kids, or a 10-minute reset after dinner.

As I shared in my recent post on the emotional load of motherhood, these “anchor points” or “lifelines” become your daily reset buttons. They create peace pockets in your routine without the pressure of perfection.

Even when life is messy, these moments of respite that intentionally leverage rhythms around rest, routines, and relationships will revitalize not only your soul, but also your schedule.

2. Plan from Priorities, Not Pressure to Perform

When you’re driven by pressure (not priorities), it’s easy to confuse busy with bountiful.

These false pretenses we allow ourselves to operate under are misrepresentations of the facts that drive our actions and reactions.

Instead of blindly moving through your days, reacting to this pressure to perform, try asking:  What actually matters this week?

Then limit yourself to 2–3 key priorities as you intentional build your week. Focus on what supports your values – faith, family, and well-being. Let everything else take a back seat. 

3. Create Margin Like It’s a Necessity (Because It Is)

When you live in constant motion with back-to-back commitments, you leave no room for real life.

Margin isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifeline.

Leave space between commitments. Cancel something that doesn’t serve you. Resist the urge to overfill your schedule. Breathe.

Because when you leave room, you also leave space for God to move.

And Mama, when God moves, your path becomes clearer, your creativity flourishes, and your soul sighs in sweet relief.

4. Simplify Before You Add

Overwhelm doesn’t always mean you need better systems.

Sometimes, you just need less.

When life feels like it’s barreling out of control, it’s important to recenter your focus on what matters most in your life.

Ask:

✔️ Is this honoring God?

✔️ Is it aligned with my values?

✔️ Is it serving my current season?

If the answer is “no” or “not right now,” it’s okay to let it go—with grace, not guilt.

5. Start with One Small Shift

Don’t wait for the perfect season to make changes. Start small and be consistent.

Try one of these:

  • A 15-minute Sunday reset
  • A weekly meal plan + grocery run
  • A consistent bedtime
  • A daily devotional moment before your kids wake up

Little by little, sustainable rhythms start to stick. And with God at the center, they grow into powerful momentum.
