I always try to make a concerted effort to focus on gratitude in November. But if I’m honest, it hasn’t come easy the last few weeks.
Between my busy work season kicking off, PTO responsibilities, the emotional roller coaster of raising kids, and the quiet ache of missing my dad as the holidays approach… my heart has felt more tired than thankful.
Maybe you’ve been there, too.
When life weighs us down with more pressure and stress than we can carry, when we struggle to stay present and hopeful, mustering gratitude can sometimes feel futile.
The world throws out well-meaning messages like, “choose joy,” “count your blessings,” and “be thankful in every situation.” And while those words are true and good, they can also feel fanciful when life gets so heavy.
But here’s what God keeps gently reminding me: Gratitude isn’t something we force. It’s one, small shift in focus at a time by noticing the tiniest pockets of grace in the middle of an overwhelming week.
The laughter of your kids after a hard day.
A quiet drive to decompress.
A warm beverage to soothe your soul.
The sunrise you almost missed in the middle of a rushed morning.
A note from a friend at just the right moment.
A comforting embrace from your spouse.
It’s a subtle but profound shift that invites peace into our hearts allowing us to notice God’s grace and provision in our lives.
It doesn’t erase the heaviness.
It doesn’t pretend everything is fine.
It doesn’t demand you smile when your soul is spent.
It makes room for God to meet you right where you are — even during the busiest seasons.
Gratitude When Life Feels Heavy
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NLT) says:
“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

It doesn’t say for all circumstances.
It says in them.
Meaning:
You don’t have to thank God for the exhaustion, the grief, the overwhelm, or the season you wish would pass. But you can thank Him right in the middle of it.
Because gratitude helps us remember God is still working in the hard parts. Gratitude reminds us:
- God is still near.
- God still sees you.
- God still strengthens you.
- God still loves you deeply.
Gratitude doesn’t minimize hardship. It magnifies God’s grace within it.
Why Gratitude Matters for Busy, Weary Moms
In the chaos of work, motherhood, and a never-ending mental load, gratitude does something powerful:
❤️ It pulls your heart back into purpose.
When you’re living in constant survival mode, gratitude reminds you that God is writing a bigger story, even in your ordinary days and invisible work.
❤️ It softens the mental load.
Not because the responsibilities disappear, but because you pause long enough to breathe, notice, and reset.
❤️ It recenters your soul.
Gratitude reorients you from “What’s wrong?” to “Where is God at work?”
Your inner narrative goes from “I’m overwhelmed” to “I’m not alone.”
❤️ Gratitude doesn’t have to be big or poetic.
Some days, it’s simply whispering, “Thank You for carrying me through, Lord,” while you keep going one, small step at a time.
How to Choose Gratitude in Heavy Seasons
Choosing gratitude when life’s burdens are weighing you down doesn’t have to be a perfectly worded prayer or even an extravagant expression of thankfulness.
It can be as simple as asking yourself: Where did I sense God’s grace, provision, and/or presence this week, even if just for a moment?

Maybe it was:
- A peaceful drive
- A warm beverage
- A moment of clarity
- A prayer you whispered
- A deep breath after a long day
- A conversation that encouraged you
- A tiny victory others might not notice
Those small moments matter.
They’re evidence of God’s grace right in the middle of real life.
You Are Not Walking This Season Alone
If embracing gratitude over grumbling feels difficult or inconsistent, don’t worry. God isn’t looking for perfect thankfulness. He’s looking for your surrendered heart.
And He holds it tenderly.
As we head into Thanksgiving week and the swirl of holiday chaos, I pray that gratitude becomes more than another thing on your to-do list. I pray it becomes a place of peace, grounding, and renewed hope for your soul.
