If I’m honest, one of the most exhausting parts of goal-setting isn’t the planning. It’s the pressure.
The pressure to start strong.
The pressure to keep up.
The pressure to prove we’re doing “enough.”
And for so many overwhelmed moms, that pressure doesn’t come from a lack of ambition or discipline. It comes from trying to pursue goals that simply don’t fit the season we’re in.
We’re aiming for progress while juggling full plates.
We’re chasing growth while already running on empty.
We’re forcing momentum when God may be inviting discernment instead.
That tension between what we want to do and what we can realistically carry often shows up as overwhelm.
But what if overwhelm isn’t a sign you’re failing?
What if it’s a signal that something needs to realign?
There Is a Season for Everything
This week’s key verse reminds us of a truth we often forget in January:
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
— Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)

Notice what this verse doesn’t say.
It doesn’t say there’s a time to do everything at once.
It doesn’t say every goal belongs in every season.
It tells us that timing matters.
And when we ignore seasons, even good things can begin to feel heavy.
Why “Good Goals” Can Still Be the Wrong Goals
One of the biggest mindset shifts I’ve had to make over the years is this:
A goal can be good…
and still be wrong right now.
Just because a goal is meaningful doesn’t mean it belongs in your current season.
Just because something worked before doesn’t mean it fits your life today.
And just because you can pursue something doesn’t mean you’re called to pursue it right now.
Many of us aren’t burned out because we lack motivation.
We’re burned out because we’re striving to do more things in a season that was meant for something different.
Identifying Your Current Life Season
Before choosing goals, it’s important to pause and honestly assess where you are.
Ask yourself:
- What demands am I currently carrying?
- What responsibilities require my energy right now?
- Where do I feel stretched thin, and where do I feel steady?
Your current season may include:
- Heavy work responsibilities
- Parenting demands
- Emotional or mental fatigue
- Grief, transition, or recovery
- Or simply a need for margin and rest
None of these mean you’re failing.
They simply inform how you move forward.
Alignment begins when we stop asking, “What should I be doing?” and start asking, “What fits that I can faithfully do right now?”
Capacity vs. Calling
This is where many well-intentioned goals begin to fall apart.
Calling answers the question:
What do I feel drawn or invited to pursue?
Capacity answers the question:
What do I realistically have the margin to carry right now?
When calling outpaces capacity, the result is often guilt, frustration, and burnout.
But when we honor both, when we allow capacity to shape how we pursue our calling, goals become sustainable instead of suffocating.
You’re not abandoning your calling when you adjust your pace.
You’re stewarding it wisely.
Permission to Pause, Prune, or Postpone
Sometimes alignment doesn’t mean adding something new.
Sometimes it means:
- Pausing a goal that feels heavy
- Pruning commitments that no longer serve this season
- Postponing something good until the timing is right
This isn’t quitting.
It’s discernment.
Faithful progress isn’t always fast progress.
Often, it’s wise progress.
And God is just as present in seasons of refinement as He is in seasons of momentum.
Walking Forward in Peace
When your goals align with your season:
- Clarity replaces confusion
- Peace replaces pressure
- Progress becomes steady instead of frantic
You stop forcing growth.
You start walking in step with God.
And that kind of alignment changes everything.
