When You’re Soul-Tired: Learning to Rest in God’s Presence

— by

If you’ve been feeling exhausted no matter how much rest you get, you’re not alone. For many working moms, burnout goes deeper than physical fatigue—it reaches the soul. In this post, we’ll explore what it really means to find rest in God’s presence when you feel completely worn down.

As someone who has often been called an overachiever, I know what it feels like to push through the hard seasons of life.

To keep going… even when I’m already running on empty.

I push and push and push until there’s nothing left in me to give.

And I know I’m not the only one.

So many of us are living with this quiet belief:

“If I can just make it through this season, things will finally get better.”

But if we’re honest…

That “season” never really ends.

When we push ourselves past our limits, we don’t find relief—we run straight into burnout.

Our bodies shift into survival mode—running on adrenaline, whispering warnings we try to ignore.

We get sick more often.

We feel emotionally fragile… or unexpectedly overwhelmed.

We snap at our kids.

We lose patience with our husbands.

Even the smallest things at work feel like too much.

And yet…

Like Dory says in Finding Nemo…

“Just keep swimming.”

We keep going.

We keep pushing.

We keep performing.

But somewhere along the way, we lose sight of who we are… and what we were created for.

God didn’t call us to live in survival mode.

He called us to live as deeply loved daughters, rooted in His presence, not running on empty.

What Burnout Really Is (And Why It Feels So Heavy)

When we think about burnout, we often think about being physically tired.

But burnout goes deeper than that.

It’s not just your body that’s exhausted…

It’s your soul.

It’s the weight of carrying too much for too long.

The constant mental load.

The pressure to keep everything running.

The feeling that if you stop, everything might fall apart.

And so… you just don’t stop.

Even when your entire being is begging you to.

Physical Rest Isn’t Enough When Your Soul Is Weary

Burnout can make you believe that if you could just sleep for a couple of days, you’d feel completely restored.

You can go to bed earlier.

You can take a nap.

You can even get a full night of sleep…

…and still wake up feeling completely drained.

Why?

Because your body might be resting…

but your soul is still striving.

Still carrying.

Still worrying.

Still trying to hold it all together.

And that’s the kind of exhaustion that sleep alone can’t fix.

What Your Soul Is Actually Longing For

Psalm 62:1 reminds us:

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.”

It doesn’t say our soul finds rest in a perfectly managed scheduled or in finally getting everything done.

Your soul finds rest in God Himself.

Not in what you do for Him.

But in being with Him.

Rest Is Not Escape — It’s Relationship

This is where everything begins to shift.

Rest isn’t about checking out of your life, or checking self-care tasks off your list.

It’s about anchoring yourself in the One who holds your life together.

It’s about being with Him—releasing the pressure to perform and letting go of the need to prove yourself.

It’s stepping out of striving and into His presence.

Because you were never meant to earn rest.

You were invited into it.

From Doing to Dwelling

So what does this actually look like in real life?

It doesn’t have to be a perfect quiet time expertly orchestrated to fit into the one hour of free time you have this month.

Instead, it can look like small, intentional moments:

  • A whispered prayer while washing dishes
  • A deep breath and “God, I need You” in the middle of the chaos
  • Sitting in stillness for just a minute instead of reaching for your phone
  • Listening to worship music in the car

Soul-deep rest is found in choosing presence over performance.

Again and again.

Even in the middle of your very full life.

You Don’t Have to Keep Pushing

If you’ve been living in that constant cycle of “just keep going”

Let this be your permission to pause.

Not because everything is done.

But because your soul needs space to breathe.

God is not asking you to push harder. He’s inviting you to come closer—to rest in Him, to be held by Him, and to be renewed.

You don’t have to figure this out on your own.

And the truth is, you can’t create this kind of rest on your own.

If your soul feels tired and your mind feels overwhelmed, I created something simple to help you reset, spiritually and mentally.
