It Is Finished: The End of Striving and the Beginning of Grace

— by

There are three words Jesus spoke on the cross that change everything:

“It is finished.” — John 19:30

Not “keep trying.”

Not “do better.”

Not “you’re almost there.”

Finished.

And yet… so many of us still live as if it isn’t.

Why We Keep Striving

For most of us, striving feels normal.

Good, even. Responsible.

We absorb the words of parents, teachers, bosses—anyone with authority—who tell us to push harder, do better, and strive for more.

We carry the weight of our roles, responsibilities, and expectations like everything depends on us.

And over time, our minds start building these quiet if-then stories:

If I can just make it through the next two weeks, then…

If I can get this project done, then…

If I can hold it all together long enough, then…

Maybe everything will be okay.

But that kind of living is exhausting.

Because deep down, we know:

We can’t keep it up forever.

The Lie of Performance

So much of our striving is rooted in a quiet but powerful lie:

➡️ My worth is connected to my performance.

From the very beginning, we are taught to measure ourselves.

Milestones. Grades. Evaluations. Expectations.

At school, we are graded.

At work, we are reviewed.

At home, we measure how well we’re keeping everything together.

And slowly, we begin to believe:

Our value is found in what we do.

How much we accomplish.

How quickly we get it done.

How perfectly we hold it all together.

But the cross tells a different story.

You are not your performance.

And you never were.

“It Is Finished” Changes Everything

When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He wasn’t just marking the end of His suffering.

He was declaring something far greater:

The work is complete.

The striving is over.

The debt is paid.

The gap between you and God is no longer yours to close.

You have nothing left to prove.

Nothing left to earn.

Nothing left to carry in your own strength.

Because if it is truly finished…

Then you don’t have to keep striving to secure your place.

You get to live from a place of grace—not pressured performance, but deep, abiding peace.

From Striving to Surrender

When you transition from a life of striving to a life of surrender, you’re not giving up.

You’re giving over control to the One who orchestrates it all.

When you surrender, you release the weight you were never meant to carry and trust that what Jesus finished is enough.

It was enough then.

It is enough now.

And it will continue to be enough—

Even in your messy, unfinished, ever-growing life.

From Surrender to Resurrection Hope

And your story doesn’t end at the cross.

Because what was finished on Friday…

made way for what was coming on Sunday.

Resurrection.

Restoration.

Hope—not someday, but right here and right now.

Because of Jesus, you don’t have to carry it all.

He already did.

An Invitation to Rest

If you’ve been living in a constant cycle of striving…

Let this be the truth you come back to this week:

You don’t have to keep trying to earn what Jesus already finished.

You are already loved.

Already held.

Already enough in Him.

If your heart feels weary and you’re ready to step out of striving and into something more peaceful, I created something simple to help you do exactly that.
