Decision Fatigue Is Draining You (Here’s How to Fix It)

— by

I’ve been struggling to get a solid night’s sleep recently.

My jaw is clenched.

My mind is spinning with all the things.

And the interesting part?

I don’t necessarily feel overwhelmed in the way we usually describe it.

But I do feel mentally full.

Between work responsibilities, PTO commitments leading up to the end of the school year, summer logistics, keeping my marriage a priority (not to mention the kids), chronic health issues, and all the everyday household needs…

I’m carrying a lot.

And it’s not just the doing.

It’s the thinking.

When Your Brain Won’t Shut Off

After shoving my ear plugs in at 3am last night, I quietly prayed:

“God, please help me see a path forward.”

James 1:5 gently reminds us:

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”

Not might give it.

Not eventually give it.

He will give it.

Why Decision Fatigue Feels So Heavy

For me, the path forward right now feels cluttered with:

  • cracker crumbs in the sheets
  • discarded game pieces on the floor
  • rising gas and food prices
  • report requests
  • dirty dishes in the sink

It’s not one big, dramatic problem.

It’s a thousand tiny decisions.

And that’s what decision fatigue really is:

👉🏻 Not just having too much to do

👉🏻 But having to constantly decide what to do next

Every choice, big or small, costs you mental energy.

And as moms, we’re making decisions all. day. long.

God Sees Through the Clutter

But here’s what I’m being reminded of right now:

When God looks at my life, He doesn’t see the clutter.

He sees clearly.

He sees:

  • what actually matters
  • what can wait
  • what needs my attention right now

He isn’t overwhelmed.

And when we ask Him for wisdom, He begins to gently clear the noise so we can see, too.

3 Simple Ways to Reduce Decision Fatigue

You don’t need a perfectly organized life to feel better.

You just need less mental clutter.

Here are three simple ways to start:

1. Decide What Matters Most First

Before you tackle your to-do list, ask:

👉🏻 What actually matters most today?

Not everything is equally important.

When you decide this first, everything else becomes easier.

2. Get It Out of Your Head

Your brain is not meant to store everything.

Write it down.

All of it:

  • appointments
  • reminders
  • worries
  • random thoughts

Clarity starts when your mind isn’t trying to hold it all.

3. Limit Your Daily Decisions

Give yourself fewer choices.

  • Plan meals ahead of time
  • Pick out clothes the night before
  • Set simple routines

Less deciding = more energy for what actually matters.

You Don’t Have to Figure It All Out Alone

Mama, if your brain feels tired…

It’s not because you’re doing something wrong.

It’s because you’re carrying too much without enough clarity.

But God isn’t asking you to figure everything out on your own.

He’s inviting you to ask for wisdom, and trust Him to guide your next step.

Not the whole plan.

Just the next step.
