Kindness Starts at Home: Teaching Children Through Example

— by

As we step into September, our focus shifts to a powerful and transformative Fruit of the Spirit: kindness. In a world that can often feel hurried and disconnected, kindness serves as a gentle reminder of the love and compassion we are called to extend to one another. This month, we embrace kindness not just as a fleeting act, but as a way of life—a reflection of God’s love working through us. By cultivating kindness in our hearts and homes, we allow this Fruit of the Spirit to flourish, impacting our families, communities, and the world around us.

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to overlook the small yet powerful ways we can instill kindness in our children. As working moms, our days are often filled with meetings, deadlines, and household responsibilities. Yet, the most significant task we have is teaching our children to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving individuals. Ephesians 4:32 reminds us of this important duty: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” This verse isn’t just a command; it’s a blueprint for how we should live and guide our children.

Children learn more from what we do than what we say. When they see us act with kindness, they internalize these behaviors and begin to mirror them. As a busy mom, you might wonder how you can consistently model kindness in the midst of a hectic schedule.

Here are some practical tips to help you embody and teach kindness in your home.

1. Make Kindness Part of Your Daily Routine

Incorporate acts of kindness into your daily life, making them as routine as brushing your teeth or saying goodnight. Whether it’s offering a smile to a neighbor, holding the door open for a stranger, or expressing gratitude to your spouse, these small acts make a big impact. Encourage your children to join you in these simple gestures, showing them that kindness doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful.

2. Speak with Love and Compassion

Our words have the power to build up or tear down. Ephesians 4:32 calls us to be tenderhearted, which starts with how we speak to others, especially within our families. Make a habit of using kind, encouraging words, even when correcting your children or dealing with stressful situations. By doing so, you’re teaching them that kindness is expressed not only through actions but also through the way we communicate.

3. Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a crucial aspect of kindness, and it’s something children learn by watching us. When conflicts arise, whether with your spouse, your children, or even at work, show your kids how to handle them with grace and forgiveness. Acknowledge mistakes, apologize when needed, and let go of grudges. This teaches children that kindness includes being forgiving, just as God forgives us.

4. Create a Kindness Challenge

Set up a family kindness challenge, similar to the one mentioned earlier, where each day involves a small act of kindness. This could be as simple as writing a thank-you note or helping a neighbor with their groceries. Get your kids involved by letting them come up with their own ideas. This not only teaches them about kindness but also gives them a sense of responsibility and pride in their actions.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

As moms, we often forget to show ourselves the same kindness we offer others. However, self-compassion is critical, as it sets a powerful example for our children. When they see you taking time for self-care, speaking kindly to yourself, and handling your mistakes with grace, they learn to do the same. Remember, showing yourself kindness enables you to pour into others from a place of fullness rather than depletion.

6. Involve Your Children in Community Service

Engaging in community service as a family is a great way to demonstrate kindness on a larger scale. Whether it’s volunteering at a food bank, participating in a neighborhood clean-up, or visiting a nursing home, these experiences teach children the importance of serving others. They learn that kindness extends beyond the home and can have a positive impact on the wider community.

Kindness is more than just a virtue; it’s a way of life that we, as Christian moms, are called to model and teach. Ephesians 4:32 provides a foundation for this, reminding us to be kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving. By making kindness a daily practice, speaking with love, practicing forgiveness, challenging your family to be kind, being kind to yourself, and involving your children in community service, you’re planting seeds of kindness that will grow and flourish in their hearts. Remember, the kindness you show today shapes the compassionate adults they’ll become tomorrow.

Let’s take this month to focus on teaching kindness through our example, knowing that as we do, we’re following in the footsteps of Christ and fulfilling our calling as mothers.
