The #1 Thing Working Moms Should Do Today to Make Life Easier (and How It Can Transform Your Lent)

— by

I recently hit a brick wall—mentally, physically, and emotionally. Between feeling inadequate at work and at home, my depression and anxiety threatened to take me out in February. My to-do list was growing at an unmanageable pace, and I felt like I was drowning.

Logically, I knew what was happening. My overachieving, type-A personality, combined with the Enemy’s attacks on my mind and body, was working against me daily.

Because I’m trained in strategic time management and productivity, I knew the shifts I needed to make to get back on track—even if just in small, incremental ways. But knowing and doing are two very different things.

And I know I’m not the only one.

If you’re like most busy moms, you’ve probably been here too.

When your list never seems to end and your energy levels keep dipping, the mental weight of all those unfinished tasks can drain you to the point of paralysis.

No matter how much you check off, there’s always something else demanding your attention—laundry, work deadlines, meal planning, school events, and let’s not forget the unexpected chaos that comes with raising a family.

It’s easy to believe that the solution is to do more, to try harder, to squeeze every ounce of productivity out of your day.

But what if I told you that the key to making life easier isn’t doing more—it’s doing less of the things that don’t actually matter?

A Different Approach to Lent

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.

If you’re unfamiliar with Lent, it’s a 40-day season of reflection, repentance, and renewal that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends the evening of Holy Thursday, leading into Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It mirrors the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness, a time when He drew closer to God and prepared for His ministry.

Good Friday marks the day of Jesus’ crucifixion—the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, while Easter Sunday celebrates His resurrection, the victory over sin and death.

Lent invites us to prepare our hearts, realign our priorities, and make space for what truly matters as we journey toward the hope and renewal of Easter.

Often, we think of Lent as a time to give something up, like sweets or social media.

But what if, instead of just removing something, we intentionally made space for what truly matters?

What if our Lenten practice wasn’t just about sacrifice—but about creating better habits that allow us to grow spiritually, thrive in our roles as wives and mothers, and even become more present in our work?

What if your Lenten practice was to let go of the things that are stealing your time, energy, and peace—so you can focus more fully on God and the life He is calling you to?

Instead of adding more to your already full plate, I invite you to do this one thing every day during Lent:

Pause, reflect, and focus on what matters most.

How to Observe Lent as a Working Mom

Each day, take a few moments to intentionally shift your focus away from distractions and toward what is most important. Here’s a simple way to do that:

1. Start with Prayer

Before diving into your to-do list, pause and ask God: Lord, what would You have me focus on today? What truly matters?

2. Choose Your Priorities Wisely

Write down the top three (not 20, not 5—just 3) things that need your time and attention today—the things that align with your faith, values, and responsibilities.

3. Let Go of the Non-Essential

Ask yourself: Does this truly need to be done today?

Is this something God is calling me to do—or am I doing it out of guilt, obligation, or expectation?

If it’s not essential, eliminate, simplify, or delegate it.

4. Be Present with God

Find small moments to be with Him—whether it’s a deep breath before a meeting, a whispered prayer while doing dishes, or a quiet pause before bedtime.

By practicing this daily throughout Lent, you’ll not only create more space in your life, but you’ll also deepen your connection with God and allow Him to guide your steps.
