How to Quit Hustling and Reset Your Rhythms with What Matters Most

— by

My mind often thinks I can do more than my body is capable of, and it’s infuriating.

When I pack my schedule to the brim with all the things, my body claps back and says, “Whoa, girl. Simmer down!”

My husband has called me overzealous since the beginning of our relationship 18 years ago. And honestly? I used to wear workaholic like a badge of honor.

But that way of living, constantly on the go, never setting boundaries for rest or self-care, is unsustainable, exhausting, and detrimental to both body and soul.

We know the to-do list will never end.

We know mornings will always feel like a rush.

We know work deadlines will keep coming, whether they’re realistic or not.

And yet we still try to squeeze it all in, hoping to be the trophy wife, the cool mom, the dependable employee.

But friend, it just isn’t feasible anymore.

The Problem with Hustle

Hustle culture tells us that the more we do, the more worthy we are. But in reality, hustle only leaves us burned out, stressed, and empty.

For moms, hustle looks like sprinting through mornings, stacking commitments on top of commitments, running on caffeine and fumes, and feeling like it’s never enough. It’s all pressure and striving, and sooner or later, it leaves us disappointed and depleted because it was never meant to be sustained.

Rhythms That Renew

From the very beginning, God modeled a different way.

In Genesis, after each day of creation, Scripture says: “…and evening passed and morning came…” (Genesis 1:5). Six days of intentional work, then one day of rest:

“And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.” — Genesis 2:3 NLT

If God Himself chose rest, why do we believe we can push through without it?

God did not design us to live hurried, pressured lives. He created us to live Spirit-led lives, anchored in His grace, aligned with His pace.

And He promises that the work He has begun in us will continue, not because we hustle harder, but because He is faithful.

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” — Philippians 1:6 NLT

Practical Steps to Reset Your Rhythms

So how do we move from hustle to rhythm? Here are four simple steps:

1. Anchor in What Matters Most

Identify your core values in this season, and let them guide your decisions. When your yeses align with what truly matters, you’ll walk at a sustainable, grace-filled pace.

2. Do a Mental Brain Dump

Write down everything swirling in your mind. Then prayerfully decide what stays, what goes, and what can be delegated, filtering it all through your values. This clears mental clutter and kicks chaos to the curb.

3. Simplify with Routines

Set realistic, sustainable routines that allow your brain to run on autopilot for the basics. Freeing up that mental energy means you can save it for what really matters.

4. Protect with Healthy Boundaries

There will always be voices pushing you to do more, faster, and better. But you can draw a line: keep work at work, prioritize rest, listen to your body, and guard your soul.

The Heart of It All

Mama, your worth isn’t found in how much you do, how much money you make, or how perfectly you perform.

Your worth is found in God’s work within you.

When you choose rhythms of grace over hustle, you step into a life aligned with His peace and His purpose.
