Some mornings, it feels like I’m running late before I even open my eyes.
The alarm goes off, my brain starts scrolling through the mental checklist, and before my feet hit the floor, I already feel behind.
Maybe you’ve felt it, too… that sense that things are off-kilter. The kids’ schedules shifted, work deadlines piled up, and suddenly your once-smooth routine feels more like chaos on repeat.
You’re not lazy. You’re not disorganized. You’re just living in a season that’s stretching you in new ways.
The truth is, even the best systems eventually stop working if we never stop to realign them. Life changes, and when it does, our rhythms need to change with it.
Psalm 40 reminds us that God meets us in the mud and mire, not once we’ve climbed out of it. He lifts us up, steadies our feet, and helps us find a new song for the next season.
“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.” — Psalm 40:1–3 (NIV)

If your rhythms aren’t working right now, maybe it’s not because you’ve failed, maybe it’s because God is inviting you to reset.
Recognize When Your Rhythms Are Off
As a working mom, it can be hard to even pause long enough to notice when your rhythms are off. Most days, you’re just trying to make it through the to-do list, not reflect on whether your pace is sustainable.
But the signs are there if you look closely.
For me, the trigger is that familiar feeling of being stretched too thin, striving to succeed while simultaneously feeling like I’m falling short everywhere.
For others, feeling “off” may look like:
- Constant exhaustion
- Running late and yelling to get out the door
- Decision fatigue and short-fused frustration
And beneath it all, there’s often a deeper emotional and spiritual fatigue, that soul-deep longing for rest that whispers: something has to change.
Release the Pressure to Get It Perfect
We don’t have to strive for perfection when God invites us to surrender and receive His grace instead.
God doesn’t call us to be perfect performers. He calls us to His presence and to patiently trust in His will.
Our key verses today speak to this beautiful relinquishment of control. Through our cry for help, He lifts us up and gives us “a firm place to stand.”
How to Reset Your Rhythms & Realign with What Matters Most
So what does that look like, practically speaking?
As a busy working mom, it’s essential to check in with yourself, your spouse, and even your kids (if they’re old enough) to see how your current rhythms are really working.
Here’s what that looks like in our family: once each quarter, my husband and I grab lunch together, my paper planner in tow, and reflect on where we are and what needs to shift.
We talk through things like:
- What we’ve accomplished over the last 90 days
- What we need to prioritize in the next 90 days
- Spiritual reflection: Where is God leading us? What needs to stay, shift, or stop?
- Value alignment: What are our top 3–4 core values this season? Are we living them out?
- What’s going well that we can celebrate?
- What feels out of alignment and needs to be adjusted?
- What are our top three non-negotiables right now (family time, rest, health, prayer, etc.)?
- Upcoming dates, deadlines, and family logistics
After realigning on what matters most, remember: small, consistent shifts create peace-filled momentum — the kind that fuels real motivation to keep going.
10 Small Shifts to Kickstart a Powerful Reset
Need ideas to reduce overwhelm as a working mom? These 10 small shifts can help you kickstart a powerful reset, one small change at a time.
1️⃣ Start your week with a Sunday Reset — pray for guidance and strength, review your priorities, plan, and prep.
2️⃣ Spend your first five minutes of each day with God — anchor your mind in truth before the world starts talking.
3️⃣ Begin a daily gratitude practice — train your thoughts toward positivity and peace.
4️⃣ Do the dishes before bed and put them away in the morning (better yet, delegate as an age-appropriate chore!).
5️⃣ Move your body daily — exercise releases endorphins that reduce stress and lift your energy.
6️⃣ Make your bed every morning — it’s a small win that sets the tone for the day.
7️⃣ Prioritize sleep — a consistent sleep schedule regulates your Circadian rhythm and restores mental clarity.
8️⃣ Speak life over yourself — recite daily affirmations or read The 4:8 Principle: The Secret to a Joy-Filled Life by Tommy Newberry.
9️⃣ Start memorizing Scripture — hide God’s truth in your heart for strength and encouragement. (Try starting with Genesis 1:1 or John 3:16)
🔟 Try habit-stacking — pair one existing habit with a new one to build consistency (for example, pray while your coffee brews).
Sometimes God doesn’t give us a brand-new routine. He gives us a better rhythm within the one we already have, one small act of surrender at a time.
